Valentine’s Day is 2 days away. Actually, by the time you are reading this it’ll probably be tomorrow. I’m still trying to figure out how it is February though. Also when did it become 2015? This year is flyyyying by. Yuck. Well, whether I like it or not it is February – which means it’s the season of chocolates, flowers, and hearts. While I am loving all the cute heart shaped baked good recipes I am seeing online this week – I didn’t think that I needed to add to them. If you want a cutesy conversation heart brownie recipe I’m sure there are 20 that got released this week alone. Valentine’s Day isn’t cupids and chocolates for everyone though and after spending some time searching for Anti-Valentine’s Day treats I realized that there isn’t much out there. Lucky for you, I decided to do my part to change this.
“The Fuming Cupid” is a cocktail that is made up of jalapeno infused vodka, pomegranate juice, Italian blood orange soda, and topped with a spritz of lime. The sweetness of the pomegranate juice complements the spiciness of the jalapeno vodka quite well. The name of this cocktail was born at work after my co-workers and I collaborated on coming up with a funny name for an Anti-Valentine’s Day treat. Too much fun! Shout out to “this guy from my work” who actually came up with the name. Originally my plan was to have this cocktail light on fire somehow, but I decided that I’d do without the pyrotechnics. Kind of disappointed I didn’t give it a shot, but on the flip side very happy that I still have an apartment that I didn’t burn down.
This cocktail is so easy to make. The hardest part is infusing the vodka and there is really not much to that. Slice up some jalapenos. Put them in a mason jar. Cover them with vodka. And refrigerate. I left mine in the fridge for 3 days. Unless you’re planning on infusing an entire bottle of it I really don’t think you need much more time than that. Don’t worry about it being extremely spicy either. I must admit that when I opened up the mason jar and smelled straight up jalapenos… I was a little concerned. BUT it actually tastes great when combined with the other ingredients. I didn’t try it on it’s own so I can’t quite vouch for that though. Good thing about this is that you’ll have some leftover infused vodka to play with and I personally think that it would make a killer bloody mary for your morning after.
On that note, I hope you enjoy whatever it is you’re celebrating this Saturday. Even if you’re just celebrating the fact that it is a 3 day weekend. YEEESSSSS. You might notice that there is a Spotify playlist right below this. I decided to provide you with a playlist that goes with the theme of this cocktail. Go ahead… make yourself a drink. Turn on Big Sean. And try to avoid scrolling through Instagram and looking at alllllll the balloons, stuffed animals, and roses that I am more than positive will be flooding your newsfeeds starting Friday.
PS – Check out my adorable Valentine this year. That face. Those eyes. I am absolutely obsessed with this little guy. So precious.
- Vodka (I used about 2 cups)
- 3 Jalapeños
- 1½ ounces of Jalapeño Infused Vodka
- 3 ounces of Pomegranate Juice
- 3 ounces of Italian Blood Orange Soda (I used the Trader Joe's brand)
- Infuse vodka 2-3 days prior. I put about 2 cups of Absolut Vodka in a mason jar with 3 jalapeños. Slice jalapeños in half lengthwise (hot dog style - haha couldn't resist) and remove all seeds. Place jalapeños in mason jar and let sit in fridge for 2-3 days
- Put ice in a cocktail shaker and combine vodka and pomegranate juice. Shake
- Pour into glass and top with italian blood orange soda. Stir
- Squeeze juice from ¼ of a lime over the top
- Serve and enjoy while listening to some tunes ;)
